An INTEGRAL Hard X-ray Survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud

چکیده
Two observation campaigns performed in 2003 and 2004 with the INTEGRAL satellite have provided the first sensitive survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud with an imaging instrument in the hard X-ray range (15 keV 10 MeV). The high energy flux and long term variability of the black hole candidate LMC X–1 was measured for the first time without the contamination of the nearby (∼25′) young pulsar PSR B0540–69. We studied the accreting pulsar LMC X–4, constraining the size of the hard X-ray emitting region (≤3×10 cm) from the analysis of its eclipses, and measuring its spin period (13.497±0.005 s) in the 20-40 keV band. LMC X– 3 was not detected, being in a soft state during the first observation and possibly in an extremely low state in the second one. Thanks to the large field of view of the IBIS instrument, we could study also other sources falling serendipitously in the observed sky region around the LMC: the Galactic low mass X-ray binary EXO 0748–676, the accreting pulsar SMC X-1 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, and the Active Galactic Nucleus IRAS 04575–7537 . In addition we discovered five new hard X-ray sources, two of which most likely belong to the LMC.

Unveiling the nature of INTEGRAL objects through optical spectroscopy . V . Identification and properties of 21 southern hard X – ray sources ⋆
Optical spectroscopic identification of the nature of 21 unidentified southern hard X–ray objects is reported here in the framework of our campaign aimed at determining the nature of newly-discovered and/or unidentified sources detected by INTEGRAL. Our results show that 5 of these objects are magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CVs), 4 are High-Mass X–ray Binaries (HMXBs; one of which is in the La...
متن کاملINTEGRAL observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud
The first INTEGRAL observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud (carried out in 2003) are reported in which two sources are clearly detected. The first source, SMC X-1, shows a hard X-ray eclipse and measurements of its pulse period indicate a continuation of the long-term spin-up now covering ∼30 years. The second source is likely to be a high mass X-ray binary, and shows a potential periodicity...
متن کاملA Long Look at the Be/x-ray Binaries of the Small Magellanic Cloud
We have monitored 41 Be/X-ray binary systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud over ∼ 9 years using PCA-RXTE data from a weekly survey program. The resulting light curves were analysed in search of orbital modulations with the result that 10 known orbital ephemerides were confirmed and refined, while 10 new ones where determined. A large number of X-ray orbital profiles are presented for the first ...
متن کاملA ROSAT PSPC X-Ray Survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present the results of a systematic search for point-like and moderately extended soft (0.1-2.4 keV) X-ray sources in a raster of nine pointings covering a field of 8.95 deg and performed with the ROSAT PSPC between October 1991 and October 1993 in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We detect 248 objects which we include in the first version of our SMC catalogue of soft X-ray...
متن کاملThree New Long Period X-ray Pulsars Discovered in the Small Magellanic Cloud
The Small Magellanic Cloud is increasingly an invaluable laboratory for studying accreting and isolated X-ray pulsars. We add to the class of compact SMC objects by reporting the discovery of three new long period X-ray pulsars detected with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The pulsars, with periods of 152, 304 and 565 seconds, all show hard X-ray spectra over the range from 0.6 7.5 keV. The sour...
